as far as possible. The precautions described above have been found to be necessary in order to achieve this. It was thought at first that a certain amount of hydrogen chloride, as well as carbon dioxide, would diffuse into the alkali. Accordingly, ION-phosphoric acid was tried instead of hydrochloric acid, but this did not liberate all the carbon dioxide, even after heating for 24 hr. at 1500. Sulphuric and benzenesulphonic acids were also tried, but both gave high and variable yields, probably through their acting as oxidants. Sodium hydroxide was tried in the buckets instead of barium hydroxide, the carbon dioxide being estimated by the difference of titres with acid to the phenolphthalein and methyl orange end points. Finally, by use ofthe titrimetric method of Sendroy (1937) to estimate chloride, it was found that no detectable amount of hydrochloric acid was reaching the barium hydroxide. Diffusion for periods greater than 2 hr. was found to be undesirable, because ofa gradual increase ofthe blank titre. In confirmation of the work of Tracey (1948), 5 hr. heating with acid was found to liberate all the carbon dioxide from citrus pectin, acetone glucurone and from hyaluronic acid. The yield from methyl galacturonide was incomplete in this period.

Morphological and anatomical changes in stems of Aeluropus littoralis under salt stress

Salinity is one of the most important agricultural issues causing considerable yield reduction in agricultural crops. The main adverse effects of salinity are due to excess amount of sodium ions that is toxic to plant cells. Most halophytes are equipped with defense mechanisms enabling them to tolerate the salty habitats. Among grass plants, Aeluropus littoralis is a known monocots hal...

Replacement of threonine-55 with glycine decreases the reduction rate of OsTrx20 by glutathione

Thioredoxins (Trxs) are small ubiquitous oxidoreductase proteins with two redox-active Cys residues in a conserved active site (WCG/PPC) that regulate numerous target proteins via thiol/disulfide exchanges in the cells of prokaryotes and eukaryotes. The isoforms OsTrx23 with a typical active site (WCGPC) and OsTrx20 with an atypical active site (WCTPC) are two  Trx h- type isoforms in rice that ...

تاثیر سولفات آمونیوم بر رشد و تجمع یونی در دانهال‏ های نارنج (Citrus aurantium) تحت شرایط تنش شوری

In order to investigate the interaction effect of salinity and nitrogen on growth, mineral composition and salinity tolerance of soure orange seedlings a factorial experiment was carried out in completely randomized design with three replications. Factors consisted of four sodium chloride rates (0, 250, 500 and 1000 mg sodium chloride kg-1 soil) and four nitrogen levels (0, 50, 100, and 200 mg ...

Oxidative stress-induced calcium signaling in Arabidopsis.

Many environmental stresses result in increased generation of active oxygen species in plant cells. This leads to the induction of protective mechanisms, including changes in gene expression, which lead to antioxidant activity, the recovery of redox balance, and recovery from damage/toxicity. Relatively little is known about the signaling events that link perception of increased active oxygen s...

Glutathione

The 1958 symposium of the Biochemical Society consists of seven papers given by British biochemists on areas of glutathione (GSH) chemistry and biochemistry. The topics presented may be listed briefly: chemistry of GSH, techniques for determining GSH, oxidation-reduction systems associated with GSH in plant tissues, GSH in animal tissues, and neural tissues, and in lens, and finally the effect ...

Dehydroascorbate influences the plant cell cycle through a glutathione-independent reduction mechanism.

Glutathione is generally accepted as the principal electron donor for dehydroascorbate (DHA) reduction. Moreover, both glutathione and DHA affect cell cycle progression in plant cells. But other mechanisms for DHA reduction have been proposed. To investigate the connection between DHA and glutathione, we have evaluated cellular ascorbate and glutathione concentrations and their redox status aft...
